This class was on Hispanic culture, focusing on Latin America from Mexico to Chile. I learned both the long history of the regions, the cultures, and the political turmoils over time. We looked in depth at these three aspects in relation to each country one at a time. We were assigned one primary reading material with all the information in a chapter per country and for each country we wrote a critical summary of the chapter as an assessment of our knowledge (example linked below). The final assessment for this class was a pecha-kucha presentation on an aspect of Latin American culture of our choice. Since I am a Japanese major I chose to look at the migration of Japanese citizens to Brazil and then back again to Japan years later and how these migrations affected the two countries (linked below).
This course satisfied one of my Major Learning Outcomes for Japanese. The Major Learning Outcome that this class satisfies is MLO 3: Secondary Culture Other Than Japanese. Though this class I was able to understand Japanese culture in a different light when looking at it in comparison to Latin American culture.
