2.1 Students develop a comprehensive understanding, appreciation, and knowledge of Japanese culture: perspectives (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), practices (patterns of social interactions) and products (both tangible and intangible, for example, art, history, literature, music).
2.2 Students develop analytical and critical thinking in areas such as how Japan’s cultural background influences modern Japanese life, how to compare their own culture with the Japanese culture, or how Japanese culture relates to other world cultures in an age of global inter-relatedness. |

This Major Learning Outcome was fulfilled through five courses (linked below) that I have taken during my time at CSUMB. These classes were each about a different aspect of Japanese culture from manga, anime, and popular culture to the history of Japan. We learned about different cultural perspectives, practices, and products and assessed our learning through quizes, presentations, and tests. For the presentations we tended to focus on analyzing one of these cultural aspects by comparing them to our own or even how they impact the culture as a whole. These classes helped me when selecting my Capstone Project topic since I was able to learn about a variety of aspects of Japanese culture that I may have wanted to explore deeper for my presentation.
